Moxibustion aka moxa is a form of heat therapy in which dried mugwort is burned on or very near the surface of the skin to stimulate specific acupuncture points of the body. Moxa is used to treat many different conditions and is commonly administered in conjunction with acupuncture.
Different Types of Moxa
- Indirect moxa – with the use of a moxa stick that is held in one place or rotated in circles, the moxa stick is heated but does not come into contact with the skin.
- Direct moxa – a small cone of herbs is heated and placed directly onto the skin. It is moved every few seconds to stimulate circulation in specific areas.
